Reading Levels:
We have selected the books in these bags especially for your beginning readers. The books have been colour-coded for suggested reading levels. Look for the level that best describes your little reader. Remember to ask your child’s teacher if you have any questions about their reading progress.
Blue— Just Starting:
Books to share with your child before he or she enters school. Reading these books together will prepare your child with essential literacy skills that will help your child learn to read. Remember to ask questions about what's happening in the book and talk about the pictures as you and your child read together.
Green— Emerging Reader:
For the child just starting to make sense of how print works. Books with few words, large print, and large pictures. The pictures in these books will help your child figure out what the words mean, and text is often repeated so they can practice with words they already know. Encourage your child to chime in on rhyming or repeated words.
Pink— Early Reader:
For the child who is beginning to read on his own with your support, but needs lots of practice. These books have more words, yet still repeat vocabulary and have pictures that help your child make sense of the printed text. These books may have more punctuation, and several lines of text per page.
Yellow—
Developing Reader:
For the child who is now able to read longer books with little support, yet still needs to develop their skills. These books have a harder vocabulary, smaller print, and fewer pictures. More attention to print is required of the reader, as the sentences are longer and there is less emphasis on the pictures. Your child has a solid sense of how print works now, and is well on his way to becoming an independent reader!
