Winner of “ICT Best Practices in Remote, Rural, and Aboriginal
Communities” contest (Dec. 2011)
The
Wolfville Community Radio project, run by the Wolfville Memorial
Library CAP Lab, has been chosen as one of the winners of the “ICT Best
Practices in Remote, Rural, and Aboriginal Communities”. This contest
was looking to identify the best methods of engaging learners through
community-based ICT projects. Through this process ICT best-practices
have been collected which can then be easily shared and duplicated
Canada wide.
This is part of the story written by Darlene Thompson, Inuit community
CAP writer:
By moving to radio, the Wolfville library and CAP site have created a
welcoming community gathering place where people “learn by doing”. The
CAP site isn’t a sterile place of technology only but is vibrant with
the buzz of people, whether they are getting together on the sofa in
the laptop corner, assisting with the radio station or taking part in
any of the myriad of activities on the computers. The library too has
progressed from being a book warehouse to hosting concerts, drum
workshops, open mic nights and poetry nights, just to name a few. Radio
has enhanced both the CAP site and library to create an excellent
blend.
Volunteers working with the Wolfville Community Radio project have
learned some great skills and have enjoyed the opportunity to
contribute to their community.
A booklet is being published, as a product of the contest that will
highlight stories from across the country that showcase the many great
things that Canadians are doing with ICT to strengthen their
communities and their citizens.
