Courses and Programs

 

One-On-One (O.-o.-O.) Tutorial

  It's a one-hour session with our teacher dedicated only for you. Registration is required. You can choose one of the listed topics. If your topic of interest is not listed, write the topic on the registration form and we will try to prepare that topic for you.  

Absolute Beginner

This tutorial introduces patrons to the computer on both a physical and a functional level.  This course will cover basic computer terms, different types of software, proper use of mouse and shutting down.

Windows

This tutorial introduces patrons to Windows.  Topics to be discussed include: What is Windows, and how is it different from DOS, running Windows, the Start Menu, what is “windows”, multi-tasking, the Task Bar, Task Manager, menu icons, shortcuts, the Recycle Bin, basic Windows programs, general Windows settings, customizing the desktop (backgrounds, screen savers, wallpaper etc.) running programs, the UN-DO feature, scandisk, and what to do when Windows Crashes…among other things!

File Management

This tutorial introduces patrons to Windows file management using Windows Explorer. Topics to be discussed include: Saving files under Windows, file extensions, editing and deleting files.

MS Word - Word Processing

This tutorial introduces patrons to Microsoft Word.  Topics to be discussed include: what is a word processor and how is it more efficient than a typewriter, running Word, basic tools which are included in Word installation, creating, saving, and printing a Word document, multi-tasking in Word, text modification (boldface, italics etc.), cutting, copying, and pasting, formatting, Word documents (margins, page numbers etc.), Clip Art and image insertion, document templates (i.e. resumes, newsletters etc.), editing and spell check to name a few.

MS PowerPoint

Learn how to apply outlining principles in PowerPoint to create a simple presentation and how to refine your presentation using graphics and PowerPoint's organization tools.

Internet - World Wide Web

This tutorial introduces patrons to the wonderful world of Internet.  Topics covered include: modems, dial-in connections, browsers, URLs, links, web navigation, security features, printing, downloading information, bookmarks, and logging off.

Internet - Search

Learn how to do effective job searching, create a simple web portfolio and how to refine your search using Web based tools. Patrons will be introduced to several different Web sites specializing in job searches.

Internet - E-mail

This tutorial introduces patrons to the concept of e-mail, and to web-based e-mail.  Topics include: “What is e-mail?”, “What is the difference between web-based e-mail and services such as Eudora?” and “Which email service would be best for me?”  Patrons will be shown how to register with Yahoo!, a web-based e-mail service.  Patrons will learn how to log in, check mail, send mail, forwarding mail, send and receive attachments, and log out.

Internet - Safe Surfing

Patrons will be introduced to tips and tricks for safe surfing over the Internet. Topics covered include: Safe Shopping, Safe Chat, Safe Web Sites for kids, Privacy Policies, etc.

Internet - Multimedia

Patrons will be introduced to cool multimedia content available on the Internet. Web TV, Web Radio, Video, Music, Animation and Games, to name a few.

Internet - Job Search

Learn how to do effective job searching, create a simple web portfolio and how to refine your search using Web based tools. Patrons will be introduced to several different Web sites specialized for job search.

 

EASY WEB PAGE DESIGN: (Not offered at the moment)

This course, which consists of eight sessions of one and a half hours each, introduces patrons to the steps and procedures involved in creating and publishing a simple web site without knowledge of HTML. Different programs will be used to create these pages including MS Word, WordPerfect, FrontPage Express, and PageBuilder. Topics discussed include: planning a web site, inserting internal and external hyperlinks, proper scanning techniques, downloading graphics and clip-art off the Internet, importing textual and graphical information from other programs, choosing a server and web-hosting company, FTP, publishing a web site and uploading pages to a server, as well as managing your web site once you are on-line.
